Internet Neutrality and Why is it important to You?

Hey Guys, so recently, in social media like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr etc and newspapers, you might have read about the word "Internet Neutrality" and articles related to it. This article will fully explain everything on this subject. The decision made my TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India)  on 24th April 2015, will affect all us i.e. the netizens.

This short video by All India Bachkod(AIB) also explains the topic:

So , lets start up by talking about Net Neutrality.

What is Net Neutrality?

Net Neutrality is the Internet’s guiding principle: It preserves our right to communicate freely online. This is the definition of an open Internet.

Net Neutrality means an Internet that enables and protects free speech. It means that Internet service providers should provide us with open networks — and should not block or discriminate against any applications or content that ride over those networks.

How does it affect us?

Net Neutrality means that all the web pages or web sites are the same, the broadband companies(like Airtel etc) cannot enforce privileges upon some webpages and force you to use that. Example: Say, net neutrality wasn't prevalent in India. Now, you are using Airtel and airtel has a tie up with Amazon but not with Flipkart. Now, if you wan't to buy a product from Flipkart, you won't be allowed to access it, or you'll have to pay a 'fee' to access it. On the other hand, you'll be forced to access Amazon, to buy your items. So, this concept helps companies to earn more money by redirecting website traffic, forcibly.

Without Net Neutrality, cable and phone companies could carve the Internet into fast and slow lanes. An ISP could slow down its competitors' content or block political opinions it disagreed with. ISPs could charge extra fees to the few content companies that could afford to pay for preferential treatment — relegating everyone else to a slower tier of service. This would destroy the open Internet.

What is the Current Scenario in India?

In India, the government agency TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) is responsible for all the decisions regarding this topic. It released a complicated 118 page document featuring 20 questions and want you to send your mail by 24th April, 2015. Companies like Airtel and Vodafone, are currently lobbying the agency, to succumb to their wants ie to abolish net neutrality. Thus, the D-Day for us netizens is 24th April 2015.

What can you do to show your Support?

Please log on to www.savetheinternet.in or www.netneutrality.in and click [Respond to TRAI Now]  and send your mail to TRAI. TRAI is waiting at least for 1 Million mails to show support to net neutrality and there's only 40000 to go, so my fellow netizen, please send your mail, before 24th April, 2015.
