MINI's AR Goggles Offers Heads-up Navigation & 'X-Ray Vision'

MINI brings up its new Augmented Vision and claims to alter the way we perceive reality. It is a set of driving goggles that brings some of the features of your standard head-up display directly into the driver's field of vision.

MINI's Augmented vision goggles are just a prototype but the company plans to bring something like it to the market. Right now it uses an unfortunate looking augmented-reality glasses, and putting them on will be really uncomfortable. Once you have them on, you will have to go through a bit of calibration process matching the output with your own vision.

It also delivers information outside the car, allowing the user to mark a destination and then import it into the navigation system on the click of a button. Not just that, it will also help you spot your car if you forget where it is.

On the go, it projects virtual arrows on the road telling you where to turn, and your speed along with the speed limit is constantly displayed at the bottom of your field of view. It also highlights points of interest including open parking spaces.

The goggles take things a step further, though, with an X-ray view. Using cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle, it allows drivers to see through certain parts of the car such as doors.

Mini's goggles fills your field of view with handy information(actually a lot) that will take some time to get used to. The cool features like seeing through the passenger door might also turn out to be a distraction to drivers bringing up the question of safety. The goggles get hot after 15 minutes and might be unwearable in a few hours. Despite the cons, it does give a picture of the potential future.

  1. As long as they're making up fake stuff, they should have made the glasses look more streamlined.

    1. They are not fake Wag. Prototypes have already been made. But it is just not yet ready for mass production.
